5 Things to Watch Today – July 11, 2017

13 Reasons Why Season 2 brought Hannah Baker’s (Katherine Langford) memory back to life and let her classmates tell their side of her story, which brought out some huge revelations we never saw coming after Season 1.

The sophomore season of 13 Reasons focused on the civil trial Hannah’s parents launched against the school system. Each episode hinged on a different student’s testimony as they recounted their view of Hannah and each of their relationships with her. Some testimonies merely restated what we already knew from Hannah’s tapes, others added additional context that Hannah withheld, and then a few completely changed how we saw certain aspects of Hannah’s story.

13 Reasons Why Season 2 Will Make Fans See Season 1 in a New Light

TV Guide recounted the five biggest revelations to come out of Season 2 and change the story we thought we knew. It turns out Hannah Baker was more complicated than we ever thought and it’s still going to take some work before these characters learn to be completely honest with themselves and each other.

5. Clay and Hannah’s drug trip: High schoolers do drugs, so this wasn’t groundbreaking in shock value, but the deep dive into Clay (Dylan Minette) and Hannah’s Molly-fueled night together added a lot of context to their relationship. Their mutual attraction was more obvious than we thought in Season 1 and they came close to hooking up long before Jessica’s (Alisha Boe) fateful party. The sad part about this reveal is that if the two of them had been able to be as honest as to each other as they were that night, both of them could have been saved a lot of heartache.

4. Tony has anger issues: Tony (Christian Navarro) was the sage Buddha of Season 1 and while we saw glimpses of his violent streak, Season 2 revealed that Tony completely lost his cool shortly before Hannah committed suicide. During Tony’s first date with Ryan (Tommy Dorfman) they were verbally attacked by an older man as they walked from the coffee shop. He yelled derogatory and homophobic slurs at them and Tony completely exploded. He proceeded to beat the older man nearly to death. We learned in Season 2 that the man survived the attack, but Tony’s punches left him blind in one eye and taking self-defense classes in hopes of defending himself if he ever got jumped again.

3. Justin is a drug addict: Justin (Brandon Flynn) spent the early part of Season 2 as a missing person until Clay and Tony found him living on the streets and convinced him to come testify at Hannah’s trial. He looked to be in rough shape when they found him, racked with guilt over letting Bryce (Justin Prentice) rape his girlfriend. That guilt went further than anyone might have guessed when it came to light that Justin was addicted to heroin. Even after Clay and his friends went to great lengths to try and detox Justin, at the end of the season the troubled teen was still shooting up which should have big implications in the potential Season 3.

2. Alex and Monty were present during Hannah’s rape: Ugh, this one was a gut punch. It turns out that Alex’s (Miles Heizer) own suicide attempt stemmed from his own guilt over the night Bryce raped Hannah in the hot tub. His memory was foggy for most of Season 2 as he recovered from shooting himself in the head, but when it came back to him he realized that he and Monty (Timothy Granaderos) were in Bryce’s pool house when the sexual assault occurred. Monty actually saw Bryce on top of Hannah and told Alex they were just “hooking up,” but after the fact, Alex realized he was there and could have stopped the whole thing from happening. They say hindsight is 20/20, but in this case it’s just an emotional bomb devastating everyone in its wake.

1. Zach and Hannah were a thing?!: By far, the most shocking reveal of the trial was the fact that Zach (Ross Butler) and Hannah not only dated, but lost their virginity to each other. This was a clear retcon from their brief flirtation in Season 1 when Hannah dedicated an entire tape to Zach because she thought he threw away a heartfelt note she wrote to him. It turns out after that entire incident the two of them spent the summer sneaking into movies, sharing secrets and hooking up. When it came time for them to decide if they were going to make it official or not, Zach couldn’t face his jock buddies and their crappy opinions of Hannah to stay with the girl he claimed to care so much about. So he ditched her. While the backstory explains a bit more about why Zach kept the note Hannah gave him for so long it leaves so many unanswered questions about how their affair didn’t make the tape because it’s so much worse.
