Dietland Exclusive: Kitty Threatens Stanley
The nominees for the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards were revealed on Thursday.
Defending Outstanding Drama Series winner The Handmaid’s Tale performed well again, netting 20 nominations including nods for Elisabeth Moss and guest actress Samira Wiley, the latter of whom announced the nominations. But The Handmaid’s Tale faces stiff competition from Game of Thrones, which is returning to contention after missing the eligibility window last year and led all nominees with 22 nominations, as well as Westworld, which scored 21.
Killing Eve‘s Sandra Oh, who is Korean-Canadian, made history as the first woman of Asian descent to be nominated for a best actress Emmy.
On the comedy side, Saturday Night Live led with 21 nominations, including nods for last year’s supporting winners Kate McKinnon and Alec Baldwin and the first-ever acting nomination for Kenan Thompson, who has been on the show since 2003. Roseanne, which was the season’s success story before it was canceled when star Roseanne Barr posted a racist tweet, received just two nominations, with Laurie Metcalf getting a supporting actress nod along with a nomination for editing.
Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert was nominated in 13 categories, including Outstanding Variety Special (Live) and Lead Actor In A Limited Series Or Movie for John Legend, who starred and served as an executive producer. If he wins in either category, Legend will achieve the vaunted EGOT — Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony.
And for the first time in 18 years, HBO is not the leader in total nominations. The premium cable network snagged 108 nominees, four fewer than Netflix.
While many TV fans were celebrating their favorite show’s nominations, others were outraged to find their programs and/or actors of choice snubbed by the Television Academy. Although This Is Us scored eight nominations, some fans couldn’t believe that Mandy Moore didn’t get a nod for her performance as Rebecca Pearson. Twin Peaks: The Return was also shut out of all the major categories (it did get nine nominations, but mostly in the technical races).
