PayPal Holdings Inc. is furthering its efforts to help online shoppers deal with the maze of buttons at checkout.

The company rolled out new “smart payment buttons” in July, which automatically show shoppers the checkout options they would be most likely to choose. A user with a Venmo account, for example, might see an option to pay with Venmo for retail purchases, while a consumer browsing from Germany might see an option to pay with a local wallet that partners with PayPal. On Monday, the company expanded this offering to global merchants, whereas previously only U.S. retailers could use the buttons.

hopes that the buttons help drive higher conversion by making consumers feel less overwhelmed by all the checkout options shown on a site. The company also expects the rollout to lead to increased usage of the Pay with Venmo option, which is one of PayPal’s main attempts to monetize the popular peer-to-peer platform.

The new buttons are “absolutely helping with Pay with Venmo,” Chief Operating Officer Bill Ready told MarketWatch of the U.S. rollout. Merchants who wish to use smart buttons can add some code to their sites, which means PayPal doesn’t have to go out and recruit individual merchants to add Venmo as a payment option on their site.

PayPal is also doing an international rollout of new marketing tools that give retailers insights on shopper preferences, drawing from anonymized data that PayPal has on its customer base. Merchants will also be able to display information related to financing purchases to consumers that PayPal’s algorithm thinks could be interested in credit products. Ready hopes these free new services act as a further differentiator for PayPal when compared to more traditional payment processors.
