The Best New Shows to Stream Jan. 11, 2019 – True Detective, Sex Education, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine

We’re finally deep enough into January where old favorites are returning to the air and the premiere slate is finally picking up. If you’re looking for some old favorites as well as new adventures to go on, there’s a real variety of new premieres this week, which means there is something to suit everyone’s taste. First up is the highly anticipated third season of True Detective, a new coming-of-age dramedy called Sex Education, and the glorious return of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which was saved from cancellation by NBC.

1. True Detective

While the two seasons of True Detective that came before this one are considered uneven — the first season was a triumph; the second was a confusing mess despite how shiny Rachel McAdams‘ hair was — fans and critics alike are clamoring for the next installment of the crime/thriller anthology series. It’s easy to see why after they cast Mahershala Ali and Stephen Dorff as the leads. Season 3 will undoubtedly hinge on Ali’s performance. And considering he made Green Book bearable enough to watch that it won multiple Golden Globes, you know with material that’s actually good, Ali might just restore the series to its first season heights.

2. Sex Education

Netflix has proven in the last couple years that it really knows how to put together a coming-of-age dramedy. From To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before and American Vandal to Big Mouth and Everything Sucks!, the streaming giant seems to have that market cornered. Sex Education is its latest entry to the genre, and it’s no exception to its exceptional peers. The sweet, smart, funny show centers on Asa Butterfield‘s Otis, who cops his mom’s (Gillian Anderson) sex therapy skills to climb the social ladder at school. In giving thoughtful advice to his peers experiencing all the normal difficulties that come with sex and relationships in high school, he starts to figure out that maybe he should take some of his own advice.

3. Brooklyn Nine-Nine

After narrowly escaping cancellation, the comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine will return for a sixth season on NBC. Considering the show’s pedigree — co-created by Dan Goor and Michael Schur of The Office and Parks and Recreation fame — it feels like a homecoming for the comedy despite the fact that it aired on Fox for its first five seasons. Back-to-back with Schur’s The Good Place, fans will undoubtedly see the antics of the Nine-Nine kick off into even higher gear this season while simultaneously rebuilding NBC’s comedy legacy. And for those of you worried about the news that Chelsea Peretti is leaving the show — she’ll be back for seven episodes to finish up fan favorite character Gina Linetti’s story arc.
