5 Things to Watch Today – July 11, 2017

If you’re still reeling over Hayley’s (Phoebe Tonkin) death on The Originals, we’ve got some seriously bad news for you. Before Season 5 is out, you’ll see quite a few more big deaths.

Showrunner Julie Plec recently tweeted this morbid little teaser for the back half of the season. “After tonight, there are five episodes of #TheOriginals left before the end of it’s (sic) run. There are about as many significant deaths coming. I know you’re mourning, and it’s going to be hard, but there is some real beauty, love and peace to come too. Buckle up.”

It sounds like there could be as many as four more major deaths on the way, which is horrifying considering there are exactly zero more people we’re willing to lose! Even worse, Plec made sure to call these deaths “significant,” which means we ain’t losing any cannon fodder characters here, these are going to be major players.

But who? Now we begin the painful process of figuring out who’s living, who’s dying and who’s going to cry the most (spoiler alert: it’s me).

The Originals’ Phoebe Tonkin Talks Hayley’s Death and Legacies Spin-Off

Let’s start at the top of the food chain. Klaus (Joseph Morgan), Elijah (Daniel Gillies), Kol (Nathaniel Buzolic) and Rebekah (Claire Holt) absolutely count as significant characters, but what are the odds any of them actually bites the dust?

It would make sense for Klaus to die when all is said and done, mostly because dying in service of saving his daughter would be one last redemptive act for him, but also because Joseph Morgan hasn’t signed on for The CW’s Hope (Danielle Rose Russell) spinoff. Unless he’s going to go back to being an absentee parent, they’ve got to explain away why he’s not a permanent fixture in his daughter’s life somehow.

Elijah also seems like a likely candidate for one of these deaths, given the miserable situation he’s found himself in. His guilt over getting Hayley killed is eating him up inside, and all the memories he never wanted just came flooding back. That’s a sorry state to be, especially if you’re going to live forever. If you add in the fact that he’s got one very pissed off super witch gunning for him, odds of Elijah’s survival don’t look great.

Rebekah unfortunately seems like the most likely candidate out of the siblings. She recently told Marcel (Charles Michael Davis) that the reason she refused to marry him was so that her sadness over her immortal existence wouldn’t destroy him. At the end of the day, all she really wants is to live a full life, grow old and die like all humans, and who knows, maybe she’ll get that wish? I’d be almost OK with this death, if only because the dream of a human life is something Rebekah has yearned for since her time on The Vampire Diaries.

The Originals Mega Buzz: Here’s Why Declan’s Ties to Cami Matter

As for Kol, can’t everyone just leave him alone? If he dies after only getting a few happy years with Davina (Danielle Campbell), I’ll have to start rioting in the streets. Similarly, Freya (Riley Voelkel) deserves her happily ever after because Keelin (Christina Moses) sacrificed so much of her life for her family, so her death doesn’t seem likely.

Marcel is a wild card here. I can’t think of a reason, narrative-fueled or otherwise, for him to die, but that’s almost more terrifying? The Originals likes to shock us with unexpected deaths, and losing Marcel would be a pretty serious blow.

The only one we know is truly safe is Hope, who would have a pretty hard time launching the Legacies spinoff from beyond the grave.

The Originals airs Wednesdays at 9/8c on The CW.
