Trifecta: New Nor’easter May Dump 3 Inches on NYC, 6-9 Elsewhere

What to Know

  • Another coastal storm is approached the tri-state Monday night and is expected to intensify Tuesday morning

  • According to the latest track, New York City will likely see 1 to 3 inches of snow, while areas farther east will get more

  • A mix of snow and rain is expected near the coast

A third nor’easter to hit the tri-state area in less than two weeks is likely to bring up to 3 inches of snow to New York City and more east of the five boroughs, along with punishing wind gusts that could take down tree branches in communities still recovering from March’s early storms, Storm Team 4 says.

Though the latest nor’easter will stay further offshore than the last two, which dumped a combined more than 2 feet — in some spots, all at once — across the region, Storm Team 4 says the entire tri-state will get clipped by the system.

At this point, the city can expect a slushy 1 to 3 inches, while parts of Long Island and areas east of the city could get 6 to 9 inches, with locally higher amounts possible, Storm Team 4 says. Winter storm warnings are in effect for Suffolk and Fairfield counties; advisories apply for most other spots. More than 5 inches of snow had already fallen in Orange County’s Monroe by 8 a.m.

Storm Team 4 Breaks Down Expectations for 3rd Nor’easter

The nor’easter approached Monday night with light snow and a wintry mix, before it turned to more snow overnight. The heaviest snow is expected during Tuesday morning’s commute. Expect difficult travel conditions, slippery roads and low visibility through rush hour.

Amtrak said Monday it would suspend service between Boston and New York on Tuesday until at least 11 a.m. due to the storm (which is expected to be much more severe in parts of New England). Tuesday morning, that suspension was extended for the remainder of the day as the storm intensified. Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy said state offices will be closed on Tuesday.

Winds will sustain speeds between 15 to 25 mph, but many places will still see gusts reach near 30 mph or more at times, especially along the coast, Storm Team 4 says. Highs will range in the upper 30s to low 40s, but it will feel chillier with the wind gusts. Expect more mixing of rain and snow closer to the coast.

The storm is approaching as tens of thousands of people are still without power after a double whammy of nor’easters brought down power lines.

In Connecticut, the state’s emergency operations center will be partially activated to monitor and prepare for the storm in the Nutmeg State.

The destructive nor’easters of the past two weeks — one hit on March 2 and another on March 7 — have been blamed on multiple deaths across the tri-state, including a young boy who was hit by a falling tree and a driver who was electrocuted when he drove near a live wire.
