A 74-year-old man faces a charge of murder in the death of his 74-year-old wife, who was found dead at the couple’s home in an upscale Connecticut neighborhood earlier this month, authorities say.

Allen Claxton surrendered to authorities around 10 a.m. Thursday, about two and a half weeks after cops responding to an emergency call found his wife covered in blood in their single-family home on Hycliff Terrace in Stamford.

Claxton had been hospitalized in the immediate aftermath of the discovery of his wife’s body, which was June 11. A neighbor who told News 4 at the time of the that she had heard noises coming from the home around 2 a.m. that day. Police showed up a few hours later and the neighbor reported seeing Claxton walk to an ambulance, his eye bruised and blood noticeable on his head.

The neighbor said the couple had just been seen gardening outside the previous weekend, and that the two loved to travel during the summer and take walks.

Details on the circumstances surrounding the wife’s death, including how she died, remain unclear at this time.

Claxton was to be released from custody after posting $1.5 million bond. A message was left with the office of his attorney.

The value of the couple’s two-story 3,338-square-foot home, which has four bedrooms and three and a half baths, according to Trulia, is near $1 million.

Stamford is not known for violence. It had its first homicide in 18 months in late May — in that case, an 18-year-old man was shot on the city’s West Side.
