The Best First Kisses on TV
5 Things to Watch Today – July 11, 2017
If you’ve been anxiously awaiting news about the fate of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., rest easy friends. ABC announced today that Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been renewed for a sixth season!
This news comes just ahead of the Season 5 finale, which we know will tie up a lot of loose ends considering executive producers Jed Whedon, Jeff Bell and Maurissa Tancharoen wrote it in such a way that it could also serve as the series finale if necessary.
“Every year we approach the end of the season as if it could possibly be the end, but of course there’s always potential for more story,” Tancharoen tells TV Guide.
“We felt that after getting to 100 [episodes] that should really be prepared to give it a nice wrap up,” Bell adds, “but we also all believe that unless we actually destroy the world – which spoiler alert: we’re not going to tell you if we actually do or not – unless everybody is gone, there is more story… We weren’t really afraid of finding a definitive, satisfying ending, but still feeling like there’s more story out there because our characters are still around and they’re going to go on more adventures.”
The question of the hour though is whether this renewal might mean Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) lives to see another day. Season 5 has put him on a collision course with death after his old injury from the first Avengers movie started flaring up, causing necrotic tissue to slowly but surely kill him. With only one episode left in the season, there’s only a little time left to pull out a last-minute save.
Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 5 finale airs this Friday at 9/8c on ABC.
