The following post contains spoilers for Avengers: Endgame

“Mr. Stark, you’ve become part of a bigger universe. You just don’t know it yet,” Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) says to Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) after the end credits of 2009’s Iron Man. “I’m here to talk to you about the Avengers Initiative.” And with that, a decade of the Marvel Cinematic Universe was born — as was a tradition the subsequent 20 movies upheld with consistency: the post-credits stinger to tease the next Marvel adventure.

Avengers: Endgame is a cap on 10 years of the MCU, the 22nd movie and the last for a handful of major franchise stars, including Downey’s Iron Man and Chris Evans’ Captain America. As such, Avengers: Endgame resets the board for the future and manages to subvert the past in one major way: There’s no end credits teaser.

Not that fans who see Avengers: Endgame should ignore the gargantuan credits, which includes a small army of technicians who helped pull off the movie’s many visual effects pleasures. Buried at the end is audio of clanging, a callback to the original Iron Man, when a captured Tony Stark is building what will become Mark 1, the first of his many Iron Man suits.

But otherwise? There’s nothing else to see or tease. Avengers: Endgame is the spiritual end of what Marvel has come to call Phase 3 of its cinematic universe, but the actual ending comes in July with Spider-Man: Far from Home. That film, starring Tom Holland as Spider-Man, takes place during the summer months — though it’s unclear which summer. (Avengers: Endgame jumps five years into the future from the events of Avengers: Infinity War and while it restores Peter Parker to the living realm, it remains to be seen whether he’s still a high school student after such a long gap.) Marvel has not confirmed its future slate of movies, though it’s expected to include sequels to Black Panther, Doctor Strange, and Captain Marvel, a third Guardians of the Galaxy film, and The Eternals, with Angelina Jolie attached to star.

Avengers: Endgame is out now.
