Emma Stone is still very sorry for Aloha. During Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg‘s opening monologue at the 76th Annual Golden Globes, Oh sharply burned the hell out of the film, in which Stone starred as a character of Hawaiian and Chinese heritage, as well as Scarlett Johansson‘s starring role in the live action version of the iconic Japanese movie Ghost in the Shell.
In the monologue, Oh shouted out Crazy Rich Asians as “the first film with an Asian-American lead since Ghost in the Shell and Aloha,” prompting Stone to yell, “I’m sorry!” While we’re bummed we didn’t get to see Stone’s reaction or exclamation onscreen (what were you thinking, Globes producers?!), it truly was one of the highlights of the ceremony’s opening monologue.
Stone played Allison Ng in the 2015 Cameron Crowe film, which also starred Bradley Cooper. After facing intense criticism for playing an Asian character in the flop comedy, Stone said the controversy taught her a valuable lesson about whitewashing, “I’ve learned on a macro level about the insane history of whitewashing in Hollywood and how prevalent the problem truly is. It’s ignited a conversation that’s very important,” she said at the time.
