5 Things to Watch Today – July 11, 2017

Nurse! I need 50ccs of “heck yeah!” because ABC just renewed Grey’s Anatomy!

The long-running relationship drama that also squeezes in some medical stuff is coming back for an impressive fifteenth season. Grey’s Anatomy first cracked open our rib cages and jumped into our hearts in March 2005, way back when star Ellen Pompeo was in her 30s (she’ll turn 49 later this year).

For you history buffs, Grey’s Anatomy will become ABC’s longest-running primetime series, passing the 14-season run of The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet. It will also match another historical medical drama, ER, which also ahas 15 seasons under its belt. Take that, Clooney! Only seven other primetime scripted shows in U.S. history will have lasted longer.

Which Shows Are in Danger of Cancellation?

And just because the show is getting up there in years, doesn’t mean it’s fading. Grey’s Anatomy is the network’s No. 1 drama in the 18-49 demo, and, according to ABC, increased its total viewers from last season to become the most-watched season of Grey’s Anatomy in four years.

Grey’s Anatomy joins The Good Doctor, The Goldbergs, Modern Family and Roseanne as the announced returning scripted series for next season. It was previously announced that stars Sarah Drew and Jessica Capshaw would be leaving the drama after the current season due to the show moving in a creative direction.

Grey’s Anatomy was created by Shonda Rhimes. Rhimes signed an exclusive deal with Netflix to develop future series for the streaming network, meaning theoretically she will still be involved with Grey’s Anatomy.

Grey’s Anatomy airs Thursday nights at 8/7c on ABC.
