Emotions are running high for Grey’s Anatomy fans as April’s (Sarah Drew) exit from the show draws closer, but those emotions are causing some serious behind-the-scenes drama for the cast.

Drew took to Twitter on Tuesday to beg her fans to stop bashing her costar Kelly McCreary as April’s last episode draws closer.

“I need to say something to some of you. I say ‘some’ because I know that many of you are not participating in this. Look, I know these characters mean so much to you — believe me, they mean a lot to me too — I do not feel defended when you attack my friends,” Drew wrote in a note. “My beautiful, loving, loyal sister, Kelly, is a brilliant, fiercely talented team player who ALWAYS shows up and dedicates herself to the stories she is asked to tell. Please stop attacking her for doing her job. When you hurt her, you hurt me. When you show kindness to her, you show kindness to me. Please be kind.”

April could depart the series as early as Thursday’s (May 10) episode after ABC released a trailer that all but confirms that April will be killed off of Grey’s Anatomy. McCreary plays Maggie Pierce on the medical drama, a character who has struck up a romantic relationship with April’s ex, Jackson Avery (Jesse Williams). The angered fans over April’s departure have turned on McCreary, blaming Maggie and Jackson’s romance as the reason the writers decided to end April’s storyline on the show.

McCreary isn’t the first Grey’s Anatomy cast member to face fan backlash over the decision to let Drew and her costar Jessica Capshaw go after this season. Ellen Pompeo was also bombarded with hate shortly after the decision was announced as fans blamed her new $20-million-a-year salary as the reason for Drew and Capshaw being written off. Both executive producer Krista Vernoff and Pompeo took the irate fans to task in that instance.

Grey’s Anatomy airs Thursdays at 8/9c on ABC.
