Hap and Leonard, SundanceTV’s Southern noir series about two Vietnam vets who solve heinous crimes in 1980s East Texas, has been canceled after three seasons, Deadline reports.

The series starred Altered Carbon‘s James Purefoy and The Wire‘s Michael K. Williams as the titular duo, childhood friends who are very different people who are bonded together through their shared history and love for each other. It was executive-produced by Nick Damici and Jim Mickle and based on a series of novels by Joe R. Lansdale.

The series received positive reviews and good ratings for the small SundanceTV network, but modest shows like Hap and Leonard have a very hard time finding an audience in the Peak TV era, with the number of scripted series on TV and streaming expected to rise to over 500 in 2018.

Executive producers Joe Lansdale, Jeremy Platt, Jim Mickle and John Wirth took to social media to mourn their show and thank fans for their support.

Seasons 1 and 2 of Hap and Leonard are available to stream on Netflix, while Season 3 is on AMC.com.
