Hulu’s upcoming series Wu-Tang: An American Saga gives one of the most influential groups in music history a much-deserved dramatic treatment, and based on the the trailer released just before the July 4 holiday, the series will be as gripping as the group’s dense music. Of course, this isn’t the first series to chronicle the impact of the Wu; Showtime’s Wu-Tang Clan: Of Mics and Men captured the group’s rise, although in documentary-style form.
Wu-Tang Clan: Of Mics and Men Is a Scattered but Vital Tale About African-American Genius
Hulu’s series is scripted, set in early ’90s New York at the height of the crack cocaine epidemic, and tracks how Bobby Diggs (aka The RZA) strives to unite a dozen young, black men torn between music and crime. This appears to be a weighty, thoughtful tale — there’s a glimpse of a Shameik Moore as Raekwon holding a gun, and Erika Alexander as RZA’s anguished mom — but there also appears to be some comic relief in the form of Old Dirty Bastard, played by TJ Atoms. Amid the gritty backdrop and the moving music from The Charmels’ “As Long as I’ve Got You” (the song sampled to create the classic cut C.R.E.A.M.) the teaser gives a glimpse of the rapper, who died in 2004, in his element, i.e. letting out a loud belch while gripping what’s probably a 40. Perfection.
