Steven Universe Future: Season 6 New Title Sequence

Legacies is officially back in action, returning to its monster-of-the-week format. Though a cyclops was the latest creature to terrorize the town of Mystic Falls, the real monster here might be lurking within the halls of the Salvatore School.

While Hope (Danielle Rose Russell) and Alaric (Matthew Davis) took down the one-eyed villain of the week in a pretty hilarious fashion, things took a darker turn back at the Salvatore School. While Josie (Kaylee Bryant) and Landon’s (Aria Shahghasemi) newborn relationship woes had a distinctly cute tinge to them, we got another peek at that ever-present underlying darkness in Josie. Most girls wouldn’t react to another girl liking her boyfriend by casting a spell to give the girl a profuse nosebleed. That’s a little far, even for magic school.

While Lizzie Saltzman (Jenny Boyd) has always been considered the more unstable twin, Legacies fans have always theorized that Josie was actually the one with the greatest potential for evil inside of her, especially considering their Gemini family history. Josie’s trick could be considered a harmless prank, but it also could be the beginning of a dark path for her, especially now that her vigilant father is no longer the headmaster at the Salvatore School. And the new guy? Not a great proponent of restraint.

The Legacies Cast Tests How Well They Know The Vampire Diaries Universe

Alexis Denisof told TV Guide that Professor Vardemus doesn’t believe supernatural beings should have to hide, and he plans to teach the kids to use both the light and dark sides of their powers. He even zeroed right in on Josie and her use of dark magic. Rather than punishing her for attacking another student though, Vardemus only instructed her how to perform such a spell without getting caught in the future.

“I think he both has a genuine interest in her and he’s willing to exploit her,” Denisof told TV Guide, adding that we’ll be seeing more of Josie’s dark side thanks to Vardemus’ influence. “He’s going to cause real problems between her and her father because of Vardemus’ beliefs and because of what Vardemus is encouraging in Josie. It’s going to create more and more tension between her and her community. I think it’s fascinating that this extrovert character like Vardemus becomes connected to a more introvert character like Josie, and that the two of them become very powerful together.”

We’d love to say we hope Josie stays on the path of the good and righteous, but for those of us who have been anticipating a dark turn for her, it’s hard not to be excited to see how Josie might handle giving in to her darker impulses. Seeing someone who cares so deeply about keeping others happy throw caution to the wind and indulge in some dangerous magic just sounds badass.

Obviously once she’s had her walk on the wild side though, we’d hope that Alaric will be able to get her to listen to her better angels ,eventually. Unfortunately, he may have to get through Vardemus to do that, and so far, the new headmaster has developed quite the following among Alaric’s former students.

“[Vardemus] has a belief that the supernatural are superior to ordinary humans; that ordinary humans can play a role and be useful, but ultimately they are dispensable,” said Denisof. “This is an interesting concept for the students because they have been brought up on a diet of, ‘humans are to be respected and the supernatural is to be covered up and hidden and used judiciously.’ So it’s shocking to them to hear somebody speak with confidence about their powers. It’s appealing to them, but it comes with a high level of risk and ultimately, we’re going to discover that Vardemus, himself, is not everything he appears — that he is definitely more mysterious than he seems at first sight.”

Whether he’s forming a secret anti-human magical army or just preparing them for a world where they don’t have to hide what they are, we’re hesitant about letting this guy shape young minds.

Another dark plot stirring in the background this season has been the mysterious, hooded figure who likes to hang out in the Mystic Falls cemetery, drawing Malivore’s symbol. Most recently, he or she (or it?) even murdered a jogger and carved the symbol into his head.

We’ve obviously got plenty of theories about who this person or creature could be, but Vardemus has shot to the top of our suspect list after this episode. Denisof played coy about the likelihood that he could be under that hood, but he, too, isn’t ruling out the possibility.

“I can certainly tell you that there’s much more going on than you think,” Denisof teased.

Legacies airs Thursdays at 9/8c on The CW.
