Devonta Freeman will miss his first game since signing with the New York Giants in September, as the running back has been ruled out of Monday Night Football against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with an ankle injury.
Freeman had not practiced this week. He had been the Giants’ lead running back after joining the team following the season-ending injury to Saquon Barkley and has 172 rushing yards and one touchdown on 54 carries in 2020.
Wayne Gallman is expected to start in Freeman’s place. Gallman had 10 carries for 34 yards and a touchdown last Thursday night after Freeman was injured.
Veteran Alfred Morris is also expected to be elevated from the practice squad for Monday night.
Wide receiver Sterling Shepard (shoulder and turf toe) is also expected to play after being limited at practice throughout the week. He was not given an official injury designation on Saturday’s injury report.
Shepard returned Thursday night against the Eagles after missing four games with the toe injury. It’s a problem he says he’ll have to deal with for a little while.
