Riverdale has always been dark, but in the Season 2 penultimate episode the show went after one of its most beloved characters.
In an effort to try and prevent an all-out civil war between the Serpents and Ghoulies, Jughead ( Cole Sprouse) sacrificed himself to the rival gang and their new leader Penny Peabody. As revenge for Jughead sending them all to jail, the Ghoulies beat him within an inch of his life and Penny carved the Serpent tattoo off of Jughead’s arm. FP (Skeet Ulrich) had the unfortunate task of finding his son in that broken condition and carried him back to safety as Betty (Lili Reinhart), Archie (KJ Apa), Toni (Vanessa Morgan) and more looked on in shock.
TV Guide sat down with Ulrich and Morgan to talk about the devastating events and where the Serpents go from here with only one episode left in Season 2.
Riverdale Mega Buzz: Can FP and Alice Make a Relationship Work?
What are FP and Toni’s reactions as they process what’s happened to Jughead — are they shocked or enraged?
Skeet Ulrich: It’s a bit of a mixture of emotions for FP. To think you might lose your son inspires a lot of emotion. Revenge is certainly part of that.
Vanessa Morgan: For me it was complete shock, like, is my friend dead? I’m just really, really upset.
Who is the revenge directed at? Is it purely for Penny and the Ghoulies or is FP aware of Hiram’s involvement in this?
Ulrich: The Ghoulies for sure. Hiram will always be a target in FP’s mind and I think so more.
Is this going to exacerbate the civil war or will there be a resolution to that?
Morgan: It’s obviously going to make it worse. [FP] is dragging his son who looks like he’s not even alive. I was just kidnapped by them. They just started a complete war.
Ulrich: It’s only going to escalate. There’s more than one war to be fought.
Will this incident make FP want to keep Jughead from staying in the Serpents or will it reinforce that bond?
Ulrich: It’s all in at this point. I don’t think there is an escape [from the Serpents]. There are ideas of just getting Jughead out of town and moving on, but the battle is too big and too important for them to just walk away. The Serpents are a family and for him to just turn tail on everyone is the wrong way to go.
Is Alice someone that FP can lean on right now?
Ulrich: I don’t think she is someone that he would want to lean on at this point. Certainly there are things that she’s perfect for. If anything, he wants to protect her.
Does the same go for Toni and Cheryl?
Morgan: The fact that Cheryl even came and rescued me, risking her own life to do that, is amazing. It made Toni realize how awesome her girlfriend really is. Toni didn’t want to put her girlfriend at risk but now that [Cheryl] is already in it, she’s a ride or die. They are going to get through this together.
Riverdale’s Season 2 finale airs Wednesday, May 16 at 9/8c on The CW.
