Roswell, New Mexico won’t be out until 2019, but the Roswell reboot already has fans stirring about what to expect from the new series. TV Guide talked to the show’s stars Nathan Dean Parsons and Jeanine Mason, along with showrunner Carina Adly MacKenzie, at New York Comic Con about what the fans really need to know before they see the first episode.

There’s quite a few changes from the original series as MacKenzie went back to the books that inspired the original show in 1999, but also added her own touch by moving things in new directions.

“What I’d really like people to know is that it’s certainly not a close adaptation of the original series,” she said. “I really took the core of these characters and what I thought they were at their center, and went crazy.”

What do you really need to know about what’s coming in the new adventures of Max and Liz, though? Let’s recap.

1. They’re older now.

“We’re all later in our lives than the original series, so we’re all being confronted with this other worldly discovery,” Mason explained. “It’s a less cheery outlook than when you were in high school. It’s also your life is expanded so much by this revelation.”

The new series will pick up with Liz and Max 10 years after their high school graduation, making them approximately 28-years old when Liz discovers that her former high school crush is an alien masquerading as a cop in her hometown.

2. Liz and Max are the heart, but not the only thing you’ll love.

“At its soul, [the show] is a romance, but I think the show really has something for everyone,” MacKenzie said. “Max and Liz are the heart of it, for sure, but we have an incredible ensemble cast that I’m so excited to introduce to the world. Their stories are going to rise to the top just as much as Max and Liz’s are.”

That ensemble cast includes Pretty Little Liars alum Tyler Blackburn as Alex, Heather Hemmens as Maria, Michael Vlamis as Michael and Lily Cowles as Isobel.

3. There’s a murder mystery!

“This is a murder mystery. I studied documentaries and I studied all the ways we could unfold the clues. I’m really excited about that aspect of it, too,” MacKenzie revealed.

Liz will return to Roswell 10 years after her sister’s death and it turns out there’s much more about what happened to her that has yet to be discovered. So get ready to sleuth, because there’s going to be a lot more than alien drama when this show kicks off!

Roswell, New Mexico premieres in 2019 on The CW.
