Santa Clarita Diet Canceled at Netflix After Three Seasons

After three seasons, Netflix has decided not to head back to Santa Clarita to continue on with the Santa Clarita Diet. The show, starring Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant and created by Victor Fresco, has been canceled meaning the recently released Season 3 will be its last.

The series followed Shiela and Joel Hammond (Barrymore and Olyphant), a realtor couple in Santa Clarita. Also, Shiela happens to be a zombie. After coming down with the strangest case of food poisoning one day, she dies but then immediately springs back to life with more energy than ever, and also a hunger for human flesh. Olympant’s Joel managed to master the art of the “WTF is going on” face as his home life crumbled around him. The two continued to balance work, marriage, and caring for their teenage daughter, Abby (Liv Hewson), all in the face of the undead.

The end of Season 3 saw Joel possibly become a zombie himself, but that’s clearly now going to be one of the many undead zombie questions the show never managed to answer. Fresco hoped that the show would run for at least five seasons to answer all lingering questions.

In a statement, Netflix praised their “‘zom-com” and continued, “To their endless credit, the incredible Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant were totally game, with an uncanny knack for comedy that brought Sheila and Joel Hammond to vibrant life, even though one of them was undead. We’re grateful to Victor, Drew, and Timothy, along with fellow executive producers Tracy Katsky, Aaron Kaplan, Chris Miller and Ember Truesdell and the terrific cast, including Liv Hewson and Skyler Gisondo, and crew for three hilarious seasons for Netflix members to discover for years to come.”

The show had an impressive list of guest actors, including Nathan Fillion (who played literally a dismembered head on the show), Andy Richter, Natalie Morales, Portia de Rossi, Patton Oswalt, Joel McHale, and Gerald McRaney who populated the increasingly undead Santa Clarita.

The first three seasons of Santa Clarita Diet are avaliable to stream on Netflix now.
