BERLIN — Several people were killed after a shooter opened fire Wednesday night in the central German city of Hanau, east of Frankfurt, the police said. The authorities gave no motive for the shooting.
The local public broadcaster, Hessischer Rundfunk, reported that an unidentified shooter fired several shots at a shisha bar, or hookah bar, in the city, then drove to another shisha bar, and opened fire there. In addition to those killed, several people were injured at each of the locations, the broadcaster said.
The suspect fled the scene in a car and was still at large an hour after the shooting, the local media reported.
The police said they responded with a large presence at the scene and in the air. Video from the scene showed city streets cordoned off with red-and-white police tape and several ambulances with their emergency lights flashing.
