What to Know

  • The ground is already saturated from rain earlier this week and because of it comes the concern for flash flooding in some spots

  • Thursday is expected to see some lingering storms, but there will be spots of sun and no severe weather is expected

  • That changes Friday, when a cold front is expected to generate nasty storms affecting people from NYC to West Virginia

A nasty line of gusty thunderstorms generated by a strong cold front is expected to besiege the tri-state area Friday, potentially walloping parts of the region with damaging winds, dangerous cloud-to-ground lightning and hail, according to Storm Team 4.

The storms are expected to hit Friday afternoon into the evening, which could make for a tough commute home. Most of the shower and storm activity will move out overnight Friday into Saturday, paving the way for a glorious weekend with partly sunny skies and highs in the mid-80s, Storm Team 4 says.

The anticipated storms for Friday — ones that are expected to impact hundreds of thousands of people from New York City to Washington, D.C. and West Virginia — follow a week of rough weather for the tri-state area.

With the ground already saturated from previous rain, flash flooding remains a concern. After isolated scattered showers in spots Thursday, Storm Team 4 said potential rainfall totals from the last week could be anywhere from a half-inch to 2 1/2 inches, Storm Team 4 says.
