Here we go again! To help catch you up to speed on some of TV’s most interesting moments of the week, we’ve broken down everything that stood out on the small screen, with shiny (albeit completely valueless) prizes for the shows and stars that most got our attention. Check out the best, worst, and craziest moments we saw this week.
Nastiest slaughter session: The Walking Dead was even more ruthless than usual this week. There were almost a dozen characters killed off on Sunday’s episode by the tour de deathforce that is Alpha (Samantha Morton), and what’s worse is that their severed heads were all put on pikes to showcase just how barbaric the Whisperers are. The moment was something fans of Robert Kirkman’s comics were probably expecting, but it was still a bitter surprise to see who was sacrificed in the process of bringing this dreadful scene to screen.
The bittersweet goodbye: Chicago Med finally let the Manstead ship sink — possibly for good — as Will (Nick Gehlfuss) and Nat (Torrey DeVitto) finally affirmed to one another that their show-defining romance is but a fond memory for both now. Sob.
GIF of the week: Aubry sure was enthusiastic about getting another shot to compete on Survivor: Edge of Extinction this week, wasn’t she? We could all stand to have a little of her can-do energy, tbh.
Survivor: Edge of Extinction
The ship update we needed: Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists gave fans of the original series a special treat this week; we got to overhear one side of a conversation between Mona (Janel Parrish) and Hanna that revealed A) she did indeed have that baby with Caleb, and B) that Spencer (Troian Bellisario) and Toby (Keegan Allen) eloped after the PLL finale. Team Spoby fans, rejoice!
Guess What Pretty Little Liars‘ Aria and Ezra Named Their Baby
The best monologue: Gina Rodriguez gave everyone a free masterclass in acting during the Season 5 premiere of Jane the Virgin. After learning that Michael (Brett Dier) did not die, and instead suffered amnesia and became an entirely different person named Jason, she delivered a seven-minute-long monologue cascading through the entire range of emotions one might experience from that kind of news.
The revival we didn’t expect to work: We knew from the LOLarious trailer that Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement‘s reboot of What We Do in the Shadows would have some funny bits, but what we did not expect was for it to have such staying power. After all, the mockumentary movie upon which it is based seems to exhaust all the vampire gags imaginable, and yet, the show premiered this week to prove that there’s still some blood to suck from this storyline yet.
Best diss track: Several stars of Glee assembled on Drop the Mic this week, and it was a battle for the ages between Amber Riley, Harry Shum Jr., and Becca Tobin and Kevin McHale, Jenna Ushkowitz, and Heather Morris. You might think they’d play nice, since these weren’t the cast members known to fight behind the scenes, but their freestyle takedowns of one another were absolutely ice cold in the best way. Someone green light a reboot consisting only of these guys shredding each other with rhymes already.
Coolest Easter egg: Thursday’s season finale of Legacies offered up yet another key callback to The Vampire Diaries when Josie (Kaylee Bryant) and Lizzie (Jenny Boyd) found a device in Alaric’s office that looked familiar but couldn’t quite place it. Fans of both shows will recognize it as an Ascendant, the mystical relics that allow users to create and travel to different worlds. The one Josie and Lizzie find is the same one they helped Bonnie create in order to trap Kai in the karaoke bar prison world in the final season of TVD, so things really have come full circle now in a very cool way.
The moment that gave us chills: Grey’s Anatomy tackled some extremely tough material this week, as Jo (Camilla Luddington) discovered the dark truth behind her birth mother’s decision to give her up and treated a sexual assault survivor with deep emotional and physical wounds. The episode featured two very impactful scenes that won’t soon be forgotten by fans. First, there was the patient’s hard decision to agree to submit evidence for a rape kit, and the unflinching glimpse the show gave of that terrible process. And then there was the moment when all of the women in the hospital lined the halls to show support for her as she faced her surgery. Both were so powerful and important and completely heart wrenching.
Best binge: Your Netflix subscription is gonna pay off big time this weekend because the Hammonds (Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant) are back to decide whether they both wanna live forever as people-eaters in Santa Clarita Diet Season 3, and On My Block Season 2 will also return to resolve the first season’s major cliffhanger.
