We’re now one step closer to more Game of Thrones as the first prequel series has begun filming, according to Entertainment Weekly.
While Game of Thrones always used to have some sort of big, splashy announcement whenever a new season was underway (if not paparazzi pictures of it happening), the untitled prequel series has finally begun filming. It’s also doing so in a familiar Game of Thrones location, as the production is currently based out of Northern Ireland, which used to serve as the hub for the eight seasons of the HBO series. It’s unclear if filming will move to other locations like the parent series did many times (so guess that means we’re not going to Dorne in the prequels yet…?).

The plot and storyline of the new series is still tightly under wraps, but it’s supposedly set roughly 5,000 before the events of Game of Thrones, with Jane Goldman, who created the series alongside author George R.R. Martin, serving as showrunner, and S.J. Clarkson set to direct. The project is currently called The Long Night and stars Naomi Watts, Josh Whitehouse, Naomi Ackie, Denise Gough, Naomi Ackie, Jamie Campbell Bower, Toby Regbo, Georgie Henley, and Ivanno Jeremiah.
Also, we have to point out the prequel hasn’t formally been picked up to series just yet; they’re only filming the pilot. That’s a surprising move as obviously we want more Game of Thrones, but maybe HBO is a little cautious considering the original Game of Thrones pilot was famously reshot before it ever made it to air.
