It’s a tale as old as time, or at least as old as The Resident. What’s more important to a for-profit hospital: money or saving lives? The central question of the Fox medical drama comes up in a dire way in the Season 2 premiere when a giant storm eliminates two of the hospital’s back-up generators.

TV Guide’s exclusive clip from the premiere episode shows Bell (Bruce Greenwood) explaining to his staff that every patient the hospital turns away or transfers is a big loss in capital, but luckily Conrad (Matt Czuchry) is there to remind everyone what a conscience is. With the generators down, over three-quarters of the hospital’s life support patients will die if they don’t get moved to another hospital with functioning power.

It’s a no-brainer that the patients should be moved, right? Bell concedes when he hears the numbers — conveniently explained in a room full of department heads — but the look on his face when the department heads agree with Conrad shows this definitely isn’t the end of that discussion. How many people are going to have to pay for another power struggle between Bell and Conrad though?

The Resident Season 2 premieres Monday, Sept. 24 at 8/7c on Fox.
