Yes, This Is Us did try to keep us on the “Who is ‘her’?” mystery with the Season 3 premiere, but the real mystery that came out of this season’s first episode involved the guy who Rebecca (Mandy Moore) was smooching on her doorstep when Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) came to pick her up for their second date!

The mustached kissing bandit is played by Weeds alum Hunter Parrish (his name was conveniently left out of the opening credits but if you rewind to that kiss, those blue eyes and blonde locks are unmistakable). He will be another wrinkle in Rebecca and Jack’s fated perfect union — but he may not last that long.

“I was really surprised by the guy on the doorstep,” Moore told TV Guide after the Season 3 premiere in Los Angeles on Tuesday. But should we hate him the way many fans hated Miguel (Jon Huertas) in Season 1? “You don’t know who he is yet! I mean you can be dubious. You can be curious, but hate is such a strong word.”

We’ll try and keep the side-eye to a minimum but Ventimiglia also hinted during a Q&A the same evening that Jack and Rebecca would take a while to find their groove.

“I love the fact that you know Jack and Rebecca, you’re rooting for Jack and Rebecca, but Jack and Rebecca took a while to get there,” he said. “They were very different people in their younger years than how we’ve known them as a unit…I think it’s fun to see that it wasn’t easy. It wasn’t always sunshine and rainbows.”

This Is Us Introduced New Mysteries in the Season 3 Premiere, and We’re Still Hooked

Don’t fret too much, This Is Us fans. There’s a very special scene for Jack and Rebecca coming in Episode 3 that show creator Dan Fogelman compared to Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze‘s iconic pottery scene in Ghost. Moore didn’t quite agree with that, but she did give us a lot of hope about seeing the magic of Jack and Rebecca sooner rather than later.

“It is a very quiet, romantic moment that I think crystalizes Jack and Rebecca’s choice about whether they are going to be together,” she teased.

The even better news is that we still have a lot more to see from Jack and Rebecca’s early courtship because the creative team is as obsessed with it as we are.

“There’s something lovable about the two of them in that time period so we thought, ‘We have to give them as much in this time period as we possibly can,'” executive producer Emily Berg said.

This Is Us continues Tuesdays at 9/8c on NBC.
