Although Avengers: Endgame concluded the series of Marvel films that has now been dubbed the Infinity Saga, the Marvel Cinematic Universe goes on. In addition to a number of films and live-action limited series currently in the works as part of Phase Four, some of your favorite Avengers will also be lending their voices to a new animated series on Disney+, Disney’s streaming service, which is set to launch Nov. 12.

As is the case with everything Marvel related, details surrounding the series, titled What If…?, are still pretty scarce, but here’s everything we know so far.

It’s coming in summer 2021. What If…? is just one of many new Marvel series coming to Disney+, but it’s notable for being the first animated series. The other new series, which will feature several MCU actors reprising their fan-favorite roles, are The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (fall 2020), WandaVision (spring 2021), Loki (spring 2021), and Hawkeye (fall 2012). Additionally, Marvel has ordered three more series to debut after Hawkeye: Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk, and Moon Knight.

Everything We Know about the MCU Phase Four Shows Heading to Disney+

The series is based on the comics. What If…? is based on Marvel’s “alternative history” comics that debuted in the 1970s and that looked at how things might have happened if key moments from the timeline had gone differently. This series imagines what might have happened if major events in the MCU films hadn’t played out the way we know them.

There will be 10 episodes. Head writer Ashley Bradley told TV Guide at the D23 Expo that the creative team presented Marvel boss Kevin Feige with 30 potential “what if?” scenarios for the series, and he chose 25. That number ended up being a bit overambitious, but they were able to find 10 stories that they liked and that they felt could only be told in the MCU as part of this show. “These are the stories people want to see, and this is the medium to tell it,” she added.

The first episode features Peggy Carter. The first episode of the new series will ask, what if Peggy Carter received the super-soldier serum instead of Steve Rogers? It’s a good jumping off point, and as Bradley told TV Guide, this is not just about a woman getting the super-soldier serum, but also the story of a woman leading the Howling Commandos in World War II. And even though Steve doesn’t receive the serum and become the first Avenger, he remains Peggy’s “biggest fan and her biggest champion” and the episode will “tell their romance from another point of view.”

Director Bryan Andrews also told TV Guide that even though Steve remains a skinny little guy in this story, he is still a superhero to Peggy. “He’s such a source of inspiration to her,” he said. “In my opinion, I just love them as a team. They’re the best together. And the fact that we got to explore that some more was so much fun.”

For what it’s worth, Marvel treated fans at D23 to a first look at the new series, and the few bits we saw of “Captain Carter” looked awesome.

Everything We Know About The Falcon and the Winter Soldier on Disney Plus

Hayley Atwell is returning to voice the character. Atwell has played Peggy Carter on-screen for nearly a decade now, and she told TV Guide at Disney’s D23 Expo that “it’s great to see her fully front and center, taking action.” While this isn’t the Agent Carter revival we were all hoping for when Disney announced plans for the MCU-centered series for its streaming service, we’ll also take all the Peggy we can get. Unfortunately, Chris Evans is not one of the many actors returning to voice their characters.

The good news is, an impressive number of other MCU actors are returning. In addition to Atwell, the actors currently confirmed to be voicing their animated counterparts are: Michael B. Jordan (Killmonger), Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier), Josh Brolin (Thanos), Mark Ruffalo (Hulk), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Chadwick Boseman (T’Challa/Black Panther), Karen Gillan (Nebula), Jeremy Renner (Clint Barton/Hawkeye), Paul Rudd (Scott Lang/Ant-Man), Michael Douglas (Hank Pym), Neal McDonough (Dum Dum Dugan), Dominic Cooper (Howard Stark), Sean Gunn (Kraglin), Natalie Portman (Jane Foster), David Dastmalchian (Kurt), Stanley Tucci (Dr. Abraham Erskine), Taika Waititi (Korg), Toby Jones (Arnim Zola), Djimon Hounsou (Korath), Jeff Goldblum (Grandmaster), Michael Rooker (Yondu), and Chris Sullivan (Taserface).

What If…? premieres in summer 2021 on Disney+, which launches Nov. 12. Find out what else is coming to the new streaming service.
