5 Things to Watch Today – July 11, 2017

GLOW, the refreshingly funny series set against the backdrop of women’s wrestling in the ’80s, will soon return for its second season. Loosely based on the real-life Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, the comedy follows a down-on-her-luck-actress (Alison Brie) who finds the interesting role she’s been looking for in wrestling ring. She joins a motley crew of colorful characters who try their best to put on a great show even if they don’t know what they’re doing half of the time.

The second season picks up right where we left off with the ladies enjoying their newfound fame while also juggling a whole new set of problems. With new episodes headed your way on Friday, we’ve compiled a few reasons why you definitely don’t want to miss out on what GLOW has in store.

1. The cast is just so freaking good. Stars Alison Brie, Betty Gilpin, Marc Maron and the rest of your GLOW favorites all return, meaning you get to follow the journeys of characters you’ve already come to love as well as learn more about some of the side characters from Season 1. Plus, pro wrestler Chavo Guerrero remains a consultant on the series to ensure that the moves you see in the ring are the real deal.

2. It’s as funny and relevant as ever. One of the reasons we love this show is that it tackles major issues affecting women today with the perfect balance of severity and humor, and the new season is no different. This season, GLOW is taking on the #MeToo movement when one character gets sexually harassed and another has a sexual epiphany.

3. The storylines hit even harder. A fair warning, you’re probably going to need to watch the new season with a box of tissues on hand. Season 2 continues the surprisingly emotional journey as Debbie deals with a painful divorce, Sam tries to connect with his long-lost daughter, and Tamme continues to struggle with her racially insensitive Welfare Queen gimmick. Brace yourselves, these stories will catch you right in the feels.

4. The wrestling moves are even cooler. One of the best things about the show is watching the actresses try out daring moves in the ring, and you’re getting even more of that this year. The ladies are stepping things up a notch with even cooler moves that will have you wondering if they’ve done this before professionally.

5. The soundtrack is the perfect love letter to the ’80s. If you thought Season 1 had great throwback hits, you’re in for a real treat in Season 2. The new season will include more of the songs you loved from yesteryear including the ’80s staple “Maniac” by Michael Sembello. You might as well get a Spotify playlist together because you’re probably going to be listening to these songs non-stop after you binge this season.

6. It’s the perfect summer show. Consisting of ten fun-filled, half-hour episodes, Season 2 is a breeze to get through and you’ll walk away feeling refreshed. And since it is such a quick binge, it’s still super easy to get caught up on the first season before the new episodes are released!

7. There’s an awesome callback to the original GLOW women. Although the Netflix series is inspired by a true story, GLOW has strayed pretty far from reality. However, in the new season, the show makes its most blatant reference to the source material that hardcore GLOW fans will easily recognize. And even if you didn’t watch the original Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, you’ll still be able to enjoy the surprising and hilarious callback.

Season 2 of GLOW heads to Netflix on Friday. Season 1 is available to stream now.
