Now that Wynonna Earp will officially return for a fourth season, that means we can stop fighting for the Syfy drama and get back to wondering how Wynonna will fight to get Waverly and Doc (Tim Rozon) back from the Garden. TV Guide caught up with showrunner Emily Andras and stars Melanie Scrofano, Dominique Provost-Chalkley, and Katherine Barrell earlier this month to find out what fans can expect of Wynonna‘s anticipated return.

With the Earp Curse having been broken in the Season 3 finale, Wynonna‘s fourth season will be the beginning of a new chapter of the cult hit, which (up until now) centered around Wynonna following her familial destiny to kill demons, otherwise known as Revenants.

“Without an Earp Curse, what is Wynonna?” Scrofano wondered to TV Guide at New York Comic Con, adding that Wynonna is probably pondering the same question herself.

“I think it just redefines the show on some level,” said showrunner Emily Andras. “What does Wynonna fight for now? Who are her enemies? She’s also lost Peacemaker, she’s not the Earp heir anymore. How’s she going to define herself? Is she even a demon hunter anymore?”

But with Waverly and Doc trapped inside the Garden and all the other citizens of Purgatory mysteriously vanished, Wynonna won’t have a lot of time to indulge in her existential crisis. Instead, she’ll have to kick into action mode to get her friends back. Because at the end of the day, Wynonna is a show about the motley family its heroine has built, and none of the recent twists (even one as big as the end of the Earp Curse) could ever change that.

“After [the fans fought to save Wynonna], it made me really realize fans love this core group of cast,” Andras said. “The show isn’t broken. What works about the show is what [the fans] fought so hard for. So we’re very aware those are the things we need to write more of.”

Wynonna Earp Will Officially Return for Season 4 in 2020

Before the squad can be reunited though, Wynonna first needs to figure out where the heck everyone went and how their disappearances are connected with the name Valdez, which was scratched into a wall of the homestead. While Katherine Barrell has no more insight into where Nicole may be than viewers, she did theorize that it could potentially be a different timeline or reality. “I know wherever she is, she’s very resourceful and she’s going to be OK,” Barrell assured viewers.

Barrell added that she’s particularly excited for Nicole to reunite with Waverly, given how little time together they had after getting engaged. “I think they’re soulmates,” Barrell said, sharing that she wants them to be able to have a moment “where they can take a step back and just really know that they’re there out of love and not fear. And that they’re really feeling really happy about where they are and not rushed.”

And after suffering so much loss in Season 3 (on top of learning she’s half-angel!), Waverly will hopefully be able to find some uninterrupted happiness this season. “It would be nice to see her not have to struggle as much,” Dominique Provost-Chalkley said. “I think it was a big year, definitely a very big year, for her. Obviously, it would be nice to have a bit of a break. But we’ll see. I don’t know. I have faith in Emily’s writing. I know that she will do a magnificent job as always in telling the stories that not only are good for our characters but also stories that are important to tell on screen.”

For Scrofano, she’s hoping that Season 4 will “explore a bit more of the dynamic between Wynonna and motherhood and what that means.” Given that Mama Earp (Megan Follows) abandoned her daughters and Wynonna and Doc sent their daughter Alice away, Scrofano “can’t wait to see if she finds any forgiveness for her mother or herself” in Season 4.

Wynonna Earp Finale: All Those Crazy, Weird Twists, Explained

The very fact that there will be a Wynonna Earp Season 4 is a credit to the fans, who never gave up fighting for the drama after a financial issue put its future in jeopardy. Watching the campaign, dubbed Fight for Wynonna, play out, even inspired Andras to incorporate similar themes into the new season.

“I feel politically in 2019, 2020 we see a lot of themes in the U.S. of resistance and how we define ourselves as citizens and what we think our country and our world should stand for. Do we believe that everyone should be included? Should people be left behind? Speaking truth to power, who gets to be in power?” Andras said. “So I feel like those feelings of Fight for Wynonna and resistance and rebellion and fighting for what you believe in, I really want to incorporate those themes into this season. I kind of want our gang to be like the Rebel Force, just fighting to define where they live and what they love about it.”

Scrofano shared that they will begin filming Season 4 of Wynonna Earp in January, and she can’t wait to get back on set. “I think there’s probably going to be a huge cheer at that first table read, not just for the cast but our crew loves this show and they work so hard and they’ve wanted to be back since a long time ago,” she said. “So I think we’re all gonna, cast and crew, just come together and party.”
