Politico reports acting White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney is interested in succeeding Wilbur Ross as commerce secretary, according to several people with knowledge of his plans.
Politico reported in November that Mulvaney was angling for the job, and says that positioning has started anew and seems to have picked up in recent weeks. The report also questions where Mulvaney’s stock will be after border-wall negotiations and notes he didn’t respond to a request for comment.
‘Green new deal’ bill coming as soon as next week: Democrats Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Ed Markey are set to unveil legislation laying out a “green new deal” as soon as next week, Axios reported. The green new deal is a set of vague, but broad progressive policy goals seeking to transform the economy in the name of fighting climate change, as Axios writes. But it has risen from obscurity to prominence since the November election, with Ocasio-Cortez leading the charge.
A spokeswoman for Markey told Axios the offices are working on legislation, but said there is no final text and timing isn’t final yet for next week. A request to Ocasio-Cortez’s office wasn’t immediately returned.
Virginia governor under fire over abortion-bill comments: Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam came under fire Wednesday after he waded into the fight over a controversial abortion bill that one sponsor said could allow women to terminate a pregnancy up until the moment before birth, Fox News reports. Critics said Northam, a Democrat, indicated a child could be killed after birth. Northam’s office pushed back against those suggestions. The bill would loosen restrictions on abortions during the third trimester of pregnancy, and allow abortions during the second trimester to take place outside hospitals.
As CBS News reports, proponents of the Virginia legislation argue the bill, which is similar to a law recently passed in New York, is needed to protect women’s health. Opponents think it’s too broad.
Undocumented worker invited to State of the Union: CNN reports that an undocumented worker fired from President Donald Trump’s New Jersey golf club will be in attendance at Trump’s State of the Union address next week after being invited by a Democratic congresswoman.
Victorina Morales, a Guatemalan native, worked for years at the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, N.J., before describing herself as an undocumented worker to the New York Times in December. She was ultimately terminated from her job and currently faces deportation. Morales was invited to Trump’s State of the Union address by Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman, a New Jersey Democrat.
