The San Francisco 49ers and defensive lineman Arik Armstead are closing in on a five-year contract, a source told ESPN.

Re-signing Armstead was the reigning NFC champions’ top priority this offseason.

Armstead, 26, enjoyed a breakout 2019 season after four injury-plagued years had prevented him from living up to the expectations that came with his first-round pick status.

He finished the regular season with 54 tackles, 10 sacks, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery and had two sacks and a forced fumble in three playoff games while lining up on the edge and the interior.

That versatility and productivity had defensive coordinator Robert Saleh calling Armstead the “glue” that held the 49ers’ dominant defensive line together and teammates marveling at what he can do on the field.

The 49ers used the No. 17 overall pick in the 2015 NFL draft on Armstead, who was limited to 30 games in his first three seasons by a variety of injuries.

In 62 career regular-season games, Armstead has 152 tackles, 19 sacks, three forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.
