A 9-year-old boy was struck and killed by a car while crossing the street Saturday in Queens, police said.
Giovanni Ampuero, of Queens, was with his mother in the crosswalk on Northern Boulevard at 70th Street in Jackson Heights when he was struck, the NYPD said. He suffered severe trauma to his head and torso.
Giovanni was taken to Elmhurst Hospital where he died, police said.
The driver of the red Jeep Compass, who was in his 80s, fled but was stopped about 10 blocks away, police said. He was taken into custody and charges are pending.
The investigation is ongoing.
