From the first moment A Series of Unfortunate Events premiered, the story has had a narrator: Lemony Snicket (Patrick Warburton). While he’s never actually appeared within the woeful storylines of the show, he has been the storyteller of the Baudelaire’s tale. He also seems to know more about VFD, the mysterious organization the Baudelaire’s parents were a part of, than just about anyone else — living or dead. But after watching Season 2, we have to ask ourselves: Is Lemony Snicket actually the Baudelaire patriarch?
The film the children found of Lemony Snicket’s brother, Jacques Snicket (Nathan Fillion), reveals there may have been a survivor of “the fire.” Upon hearing this information, Count Olaf (Neil Patrick Harris) jumps to the conclusion that it means the Baudelaire fire even though we know there were at least two other fires in the history of the show: the Paltryville Fire and the Quagmire Fire.
The plot thickens when one realizes that every episode of Season 2 was preceded by a morose love note to the dearly departed Beatrice — the Baudelaires’ mother. If Beatrice is dead and there was an unexpected survivor of the fire, then the natural conclusion is that the Baudelaires’ father somehow survived Count Olaf’s assassination attempt and is roaming free somewhere.

The only thing we know about Lemony Snicket is the love of his life is dead and he’s on the lam for some reason, but the fact that he’s so familiar with the Baudelaires’ story is suspicious. Why has he investigated the children’s misfortunes so devotedly? And from who exactly is he running? Those questions seem easy to answer if you assume he’s actually Bertrand Baudelaire. He’s investigating his children’s story in an effort to track them down, and he’s in hiding so as to avoid another assassination attempt.
The other popular theory about the survivor of “the fire” is that it could be Quigley Quagmire, the third triplet of the Quagmire family who reportedly perished in the Quagmire fire. There was much ado about nothing in regards to the Quagmire “twins,” who were actually triplets whose brother had died in a mysterious fire. If their brother actually survived, it would make the constant insistence that they’re not twins but rather triplets much more understandable.
