All Americanhas gone from a bubble show to a darling for The CW. The network announced Tuesday that the football drama has been extended by three episodes, bringing the episode count to 16, matching Season 1’s length.

The news comes with the ratings roll out for the All American Season 2 premiere, which achieved a 0.3 rating in adults 18-49 and 930,000 viewers on night one. That is a double-digit improvement over the series premiere last year and set a series-high rating effort.

There’s an easy answer for the second season bump: Netflix. While The CW waited last spring to renew All American until shortly before the network’s Upfronts presentation in May, CW boss Mark Pedowitz revealed at the Television Critics Association summer press tour that All American was seeing streaming numbers akin to Riverdale before that show’s second season. As we all know, Riverdale is now one of The CW’s most popular shows.

All American is inspired by the story of Spencer Paysinger, an NFL receiver who grew up in Crenshaw, Los Angeles, but was recruited to play for the Beverly High. The second season of the series picks up with Spencer James (Daniel Ezra) still stuck between his home at Crenshaw and the new family he’s made in Beverly Hills, amidst the drama left over from the reveal that his coach, Billy (Taye Diggs), had an affair with his mother 10 years prior.

All American airs Mondays at 8/7c on The CW.
