Altered Carbon‘s second season will feature at least a few familiar faces. Although Joel Kinnaman won’t return as Takeshi Kovacs (instead, Anthony Mackie will be taking over the part), Season 2 will see the returns of Renée Elise Goldsberry as Quell and Chris Conner as Poe, Netflix announced Friday.
Throughout the first season, Quell only appeared in flashbacks that centered on her love story with Kovacs. Quell was already dead when the first season began, with the leader of the Envoys having been killed in the rebellion, but once Kovacs learned her cortical stack had been backed up, he set out on a quest to reunite with her in the Season 1 finale. Per Netflix’s official description of Quell in Season 2, she’ll be “driven by her desire to reset the balance between life and death” when she appears again. Given that tease, it sounds like Quell won’t be too keen on backing herself up this time, so hopefully she doesn’t get killed (again) and experience Real Death.

Also dead when Season 1 ended, Poe, too, will be resurrected for Season 2. Seeing as he’s an A.I. hologram, it makes sense that he’s backed up somewhere, so resurrection likely won’t be too difficult. And after Kovacs found himself betrayed by his sister (Dichen Lachman) last season, we’re happy to know he’ll have a loyal ally like Poe by his side again.
In addition to the two exciting returns, Netflix also announced a slew of new characters joining the sci-fi world. Simone Missick joins the cast as Trepp, an expert bounty hunter; Dina Shihabi will play Dig 301, an unemployed A.I. who links up with Poe; Torben Liebrecht will play Col. Ivan Carrerra, a Protectorate Special Forces leader hunting down Kovacs; and James Saito will play Tanaseda, a centuries-old Yakuza boss who has history with Kovacs.
Altered Carbon‘s second season will also find Fringe‘s Alison Schapker joining the series as co-showrunner alongside Laeta Kalogridis. For a show in which people run through sleeves like candy, it seems fitting that Altered Carbon is undergoing a massive overhaul between seasons. And with Richard K. Morgan’s novels leading the way, we can’t wait to see what’s next for our weary mercenary when Season 2 premieres… eventually. No premiere date for the eight-episode season has been set yet, unfortunately, but production has begun.
