American Horror Story: Apocalypse has brought back almost all of the main players from Murder House and Coven, including bringing back nearly all of Cordelia’s (Sarah Paulson) coven members (including the dead ones). But when the castings were coming out ahead of the FX anthology’s September premiere, there was one member of the coven noticeably missing: Nan (Jamie Brewer).

Fans kept debating whether or not we’d see the witch, who was killed by Marie Laveau (Angela Bassett) and Fiona Goode (Jessica Lange) as a sacrifice to Papa Legba (Lance Reddick), but Wednesday’s episode finally put the questions to rest. In an effort to do whatever it takes to stop Michael (Cody Fern), Cordelia went to the new Voodoo Queen Dinah (Adina Porter) to get her to call Papa Legba for help. And when Papa Legba arrived, he brought his best “little helper” with him: Nan.

The witch apparently has taken to Hell quite well, getting into mischief and lavishing in her new role. Nan did always have a bit of an edge to her and could get aggressive when underestimated or challenged (or when murdering the mother of her crush), but it still broke our hearts a little bit to see how much Nan LOVES Hell. That’s not to say that Nan is completely different from the girl we knew in Coven. She still misses and loves her friends from Miss Robichaux’s… to the point where she begs Cordelia to sell their souls to Papa Legba so they can all be reunited with Hell. So clearly Nan’s priorities are a bit off. Then again, if Cordelia had just sacrificed her girls, she would have saved the lives of billions, so maybe she’s the one who needs to reprioritize.

And while we were thrilled to see Nan again, this little trip back into Papa Legba’s world did rub a bit of salt in the wound of the exclusion of Marie Laveau this season. If we were going to bring Papa Legba back, could Ryan Murphy really not think of a way to work in the great Angela Bassett too?

American Horror Story: Apocalpyse airs Wednesday at 10/9c on FX.
