Aramark to ‘significantly reduce’ single-use plastics by 2022
Food and facilities service group Aramark said Tuesday that it will “significantly reduce” the use of disposable, single-use plastics like straws, stirrers and bags by 2022. The company will take action in 19 countries where two billion meals are served across schools, workplaces, hospitals and other venues each year. Efforts include phasing out straws and stirrers in favor of eco-friendly alternatives starting in September 2018 and expanding offerings of reusable water bottles, coffee mugs, and take-out containers. Goals include 100% elimination at national parks, select business dining locations and university residential dining, and 30% to 60% reduction at grade schools, sports venues and health care facilities. Aramark joins companies like McDonald’s Corp. , Starbucks Corp. and Hyatt Hotels Corp. that are taking steps to eliminate the use of plastics. Aramark shares are down 7.6% for the year to date while the S&P 500 index is up 5% for the period.
