At least 28 people were killed in a coal mine explosion in northern Turkey that left dozens of workers trapped, the country’s health minister said on Saturday.

The explosion occurred on Friday in the coastal province of Bartin. The interior minister, Suleyman Soylu, later said that there had been 110 people in the mine at the time and that 49 of them had been unable to escape and remained trapped, The Associated Press reported.

Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said on Twitter early Saturday morning that 11 people had been rescued and were being treated — five in Bartin and six in Istanbul.

This is a developing story.
