Batwoman Casts Rachel Maddow as Vesper Fairchild

In a shocking but somehow perfectly fitting move, Batwoman has recruited Rachel Maddow to guest star in its first season. TV Guide has confirmed that Maddow will be playing Vesper Fairchild, a character Batman fans will recognize from the comics. Vesper, a popular TV and radio personality, was actually romantically involved in with Bruce Wayne for a hot minute in the comics, though it’s unclear whether that history will carry over into the CW series. The Hollywood Reporter first reported the news of the MSNBC host’s casting.

Though there are apparently no current plans for Maddow to make an onscreen appearance, she is slated to play a role in several episodes, so keep your ears peeled for her distinctive voice on the radio! Just maybe don’t expect her to be saying nice things about Batwoman (Ruby Rose)…

“We consider Vesper Fairchild to be the sardonic Voice of Gotham,” Batwoman showrunner Caroline Dries told The Hollywood Reporter in a statement. “In addition to Rachel’s interest in Batwoman, we thought she’d be the perfect casting choice because her own hard-hitting journalism wildly contrasts Vesper’s penchant for snark, gossip and criticism of female superheroes.”

Maddow addressed the news on Twitter, writing, “I know no one’s going to believe this is true, but it’s true. I’m ‘Vesper Fairchild’ in the new Batwoman TV show that starts this Sunday night on The CW. (My character is soooo not me; turns out playing her is one of the most fun things I’ve ever done).”

Batwoman premieres Sunday, Oct. 6 at 8/7c on the CW.
