CAMBRIDGE, Mass. –

CarGurus senior editor Matt Smith says the company intends its Best Used Car Awards to help shoppers as they search for a used vehicle. The company aims for its awards to “provide an extra level of trust during their shopping process,” Smith said in a news release.

Smith says this year’s winners and finalists are popular vehicles receiving strong reviews among experts and drivers. Those vehicles are also projected to have strong value retention, Smith said.

“This especially holds true for our inaugural Editor’s Choice winner — the 2016-2020 Kia Sorento— a vehicle that earned this accolade through strong scores across each criterion CarGurus uses in our assessment,” Smith said.

CarGurus announced the winners of its fourth annual Best Used Car Awards on Wednesday, stating that the 2020 awards identify the best recent-year used models across 10 body style categories. The company based the awards on its analysis of long-term projected value retention, driver satisfaction, expert reviews, and model popularity and availability.

CarGurus selected the Used Car Awards nominees from late-model cars originally available for sale in the United States. The company evaluated nominees on criteria including CarGurus user reviews, professional test drive reviews, popularity, availability, and CarGurus’ projected 12-year value retention.

The company determined the “Editor’s Choice” by a combination of the vehicles with the highest scores across each category and the CarGurus editorial team’s overall conclusion “based on the spirit of the awards.”

CarGurus lists this year’s winners and finalists in order for each body style category:
