If you ever wondered why more original Beverly Hills, 90210 stars didn’t appear on The CW’s retooling of the iconic show, Ian Ziering officially cleared it up: He doesn’t consider it worthy.

The original cast, which is now fronting a heightened-reality revival, BH9210, spoke to journalists on at the Television Critics Association summer press tour on Wednesday. They discussed why 2019 felt like the right time to get the crew back together instead of 2008, when The CW launched its take on the flagship show, 90210.

“[Jennie Garth and Tori Spelling] had the wherewithal to put [BH90210] together and had the relationships with us to make it happen,” Ziering said. “That show that you saw — when did it air? However many years ago — wasn’t really an iteration. They were using Beverly Hills, 90210 to lure people in. As soon as I saw that pilot episode, I realized it had nothing to do with what we created.”

He made those statements while sitting between Garth, who starred on The CW series, and Shannen Doherty, who made several guest starring appearances. The inclusion of both Kelly Taylor and Brenda Walsh in that property actually makes it a sequel to the original series, and not a disconnected reboot.

“That was more of a soap opera, while the original 90210 was more substantive, much more issue-oriented. I feel like people related to our show much more than that because of that, not just in the United States, but all around the world,” Ziering continued. “We were on 10 years and they were on for five, which is a success, but no one is going to make a remake of that show. With all due respect, [we are] always imitated, never recreated.”

What does this mean for BH90210 going forward? They won’t be including any story developments covered on The CW series, like Kelly having Dylan’s (Luke Perry) kid. Also, you probably shouldn’t expect Shenae Grimes to be making any guest appearances on the reunion show.

In the meantime, you can watch the original Beverly Hills, 90210 series that everyone loves on CBS All Access and Hulu.

BH90210 premieres Wednesday, Aug. 7 at 9/8c on Fox.
