Black Lightning‘s titular character might not be your typical CW lead — Jefferson (Cress Williams) is a fully-grown superhero with a long history of crime-fighting, after all — but that doesn’t mean we’re not going to get our fair share of coming-of-age tales in Season 2.
Showrunner Salim Akil recently hinted to a small group of reporters that while Anissa (Nafessa Williams) and Jefferson will both be in the groove with regards to their abilities when we reenter the Black Lighting world, Jennifer (China Anne McClain) will still be very much at odds with her burgeoning powers.
“She’s afraid of what [her power] means for her future,” Akil said. “I think last season one of the questions she had is, ‘Can I have kids?’ One of the questions she’ll have this year is, ‘If I have sex, will I hurt somebody because I can’t control my powers?’ Also, dealing with the issue of now that everyone knows that these kids exist, these pod kids, there’s going to be a negative spin on metas. So, am I hunted? Am I a monster? What am I? I don’t really know what I am? It’s hard enough being a young woman — just being a young woman. Then being a young black woman. Then now having these powers that everybody’s afraid of, she can’t even go to school.”

That identity crisis will cause a lot of turmoil for Jennifer this season, especially since both her sister and her father have always felt comfortable in their identities as powered people. The fact that her experience is so different could end up pushing her away from her family in the long run. One person it could actually push Jennifer toward, however, is her ex-boyfriend, bad boy Khalil (Jordan Calloway).
“He killed her father, but he killed Black Lightning,” Akil explained. “Would he have done the same thing if he had known that was her dad? He’s got an excuse, but… now that she knows he has a certain type of power and she has powers, there will be an understanding there. There will be some sort of understanding. I don’t know if they’ll get back together, but at least she’ll understand.”
It might be asking too much for Jennifer to forgive him for his attack on her dad (no matter how unaware he was of Black Lightning’s true identity), but it’s kind of hard not to want these two crazy kids to figure it out. After all, who doesn’t love a good Romeo and Juliet romance?
Black Lightning will return for Season 2 on Tuesday, Oct. 9 at 9/8c on The CW.
