(Brace yourselves for spoilers from Chicago Med‘s fall finale, titled “Death Do Us Part,” below. Read at your own risk!)

Are you sitting down, One Chicago fam? Will (Nick Gehlfuss) and Natalie (Torrey DeVitto) epic love story took an unexpected turn in Chicago Med‘s shocking fall finale and we’re gonna need a moment to recover.

What was supposed to be the happiest day of their lives turned out to be their most memorable for all the wrong reasons. Wednesday’s jaw-dropping hour ended with Will leaving a stunned and heartbroken Natalie alone in her wedding gown wondering why her fiancée is being whisked away by the FBI. It looks like Will’s decision to treat the mobster Ray in exchange for a wedding venue finally caught up to him and now he’s paid the ultimate price by ditching his soon-to-be wife on their wedding day.

“They’re being torn apart and she doesn’t understand what’s happening,” showrunner Diane Frolov told TV Guide. “She’s left in her wedding dress with no answers but obviously loving him and him loving her.”

It all went down when Ray’s henchmen kidnapped Will on his way to the church and forced him–at gunpoint, no less–to perform a makeshift operation using a power drill and his wits since treating Ray at Chicago Med was out of the question. The procedure may have worked out for the aging gangster but Will remained a hostage while Jay (Jesse Lee Soffer) desperately searched for his missing younger bro.

Jay’s investigation turned up a witness at Chicago Med who was being operated on by Connor (Colin Donnell) and Ava (Norma Kuhling). Forcing the surgeons’ hands, he convinced them to wake their patient for questioning about Will’s whereabouts. Fortunately for Jay, the risk paid off and he got the answers that he needed to find his brother. The witness, on the other hand, didn’t fare so well and succumbed to his injuries after being woken up too soon.

Things were also dire for Will whose efforts to get to the church and finally marry Natalie ended up being in vain. Will made it just in time to tearfully kiss his fiance goodbye before entering the witness protection program. While things may look uncertain for the lovebirds–Will has no idea if or when he’ll return–Chicago Med co-showrunner Andrew Schneider says this tragic development doesn’t necessarily mean they’re done just yet.

“Don’t give up hope!” he teased.

When Will eventually does make his way back to town (come on, you know it’s happening), they’ll still have a mountain of problems to sort out given that Will had been lying to Natalie for months. Although their future seems up in the air right now, you can rest assured that Will’s business with Ray is done. Schneider confirmed that that story is over so you don’t have to worry about the mobster coming between Will and Nat in the second half of the season. Halstead, however, will continue to pop up in the coming episodes though not as frequently.

“He’s still present,” Schneider added.

Find out how things turn out for Will and Natalie when Chicago Med returns in 2019.
