Antonio Dawson (Jon Seda) should consider himself an extremely lucky man. In a stunning turn of events, he likely won’t face any real consequences for fatally shoving the guy who kidnapped his daughter.

Picking up right where we left off, Chicago P.D.‘s winter premiere found Voight (Jason Beghe) concocting a last-minute cover story with the intent of taking the blame for Antonio’s impulsive decision. Given the sergeant’s spotty track record, however, this latest kerfuffle could have backfired in a big way, and Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) was not willing to take that risk.

Instead, Ruzek went against Voight’s orders –gasp — and took responsibility for Rizzo’s death by going on record to claim self-defense. The reckless move may have earned him a harsh lecture from Voight, but more importantly, it looks like Ruzek also secured Intelligence’s future. But that doesn’t mean his split-second decision won’t come back to haunt him down the line.

“It’s one of these things that very well may come back. It’s a messy situation where there’s no perfect solution and they did what they believe is the best bad choice they had so we’ll see,” showrunner Rick Eid previously told TV Guide.

Intelligence has a penchant for evading trouble even when things look dire, so it just may survive this latest incident too. It’s kinda Intelligence’s thing.

Wednesday’s episode also made it clear that Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) and Ruzek aren’t going anywhere as a couple. After a heated argument that nearly outed their relationship to the entire police station, Upton finally came clean to Jay (Jesse Lee Soffer), who overheard their emotional exchange. It’s obvious he’s harboring secret feelings for her and is just too afraid to admit them out loud, so his nonchalant response is surprising.

“It didn’t think this would turn into anything. It sort of caught me off guard,” Upton revealed to him. “I should have told you. I’m sorry.”

Keeping his cool, Jay reassured her that all was well between them. “We’re good. We’re always gonna be good,” he said.

Yeah, don’t expect him or Upton to profess their love for each other anytime soon. According to Eid, Upzek is sticking around, so you might as well get used it. My condolences to all the heartbroken Burzek shippers during this difficult time.
