Colorado Springs investigators have identified a 41-year-old man shot last week by a police officer after he pulled a gun on a bystander during a burglary call.
Jese Paul Schlegal was killed following a 911 call April 25 from a home in the 1000 block of West 19th Street reporting a burglary in progress.
Police officer Troy Kananen, a 23-year veteran, was the first officer to arrive just after 6:15 a.m. He immediately saw a man leave the building and take off running, according to a news release by Sgt. John Koch, Colorado Springs spokesman.
Kananen ran after the suspect and saw him draw a pistol and aim it at a bystander who was also at the scene of the burglary, Koch’s news release says.
Kananen then fired several shots, striking Schlegal multiple times. Schlegal was taken to a hospital, where he later died of his injuries.
Officer Kananen is a patrol officer in the Gold Hill Division.
The El Paso County Deadly Force Investigation Team is investigating the fatal shooting.
