A Weld County man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for assaulting and severely injuring his now former wife, including beating her in the face with the stock of an assault rifle.
David Guthier, 28, was sentenced Tuesday in Greeley after an agreement to plead guilty, according to the district attorney’s office.
On March 17, 2017, police were called to the couple’s home on reports of domestic violence. When officers arrived they found the victim suffering with a bloody, swollen, disfigured face. She told investigators Guthier had come home intoxicated and pulled her from a couch where she had been sitting with her 4-year-old son. Another child was asleep in a bedroom.
Guthier dragged the victim into a bedroom, tore off her clothing and repeatedly punched her in the face and kicked her in the genital area, according to a news release. “Guthier then grabbed an AR-15 rifle and began beating her in the face with the stock of the rifle.” She lost consciousness as Guthier strangled her.
The victim told investigators she believed she was going to die.
An AR-15 covered in blood was found at the scene, along with clumps of the victim’s scalp and hair. Blood was found in the living room, bathroom and bedroom. A china cabinet had been broken, and two holes had been punched through a bedroom wall. Guthier was found sleeping. Also recovered from the home were anabolic steroids and syringes. The victim’s injuries included a broken nose and cracked pelvis.
“This victim is lucky to be alive today,” said Robb Miller, assistant district attorney.
Guthier pleaded guilty to first-degree assault and second-degree assault, both felonies, and false imprisonment, a misdemeanor. All charges are acts of domestic violence.
