Deadliest Catch Season 15 Will Have a New Look

Deadliest Catch is about as far from a controlled filming environment as a TV crew can get, but 15 seasons in, they’re still finding new ways to capture the best footage.

“For the show, we’re out in the middle of the Bering Sea, and it is about as bad as you can imagine for shooting just as a shooter,” Deadliest Catch director of photography David Reichert told PopCulture.com when they visited the series on location in Dutch Harbor, Alaska. “We’re using better and better equipment, because we’re 15 years in. We need to make this thing better every year.”

For Season 15, which premieres April 9, the most notable upgrade was in their ability to capture nighttime action. The crew used a new, state-of-the-art camera system capable of picking up even the slightest bit of light and illuminating a whole scene — which means fans of the dramatic docuseries can expect to get a better look at everything that goes down after dark.

“It is, without a doubt, the biggest look upgrade we’ve done in the 15-year history of the show,” Reichert told PopCulture.

But it sounds like the Deadliest Catch crew shouldn’t get too attached to that high-tech equipment. Reichert revealed that losing cameras at sea is part of the gig.

“I mean, one guy lost six in like a week once,” he said. “I don’t know how that happened, but I think that we plan on losing about probably about eight or nine cameras a season out there.”

Deadliest Catch Season 15 premieres Tuesday, April 9 at 9 p.m. ET on Discovery.
