Disney Channel star Cameron Boyce has passed away at the age of 20.

The young actor’s family confirmed the news of his death in a statement to E! News Sunday morning, which read: “It is with a profoundly heavy heart that we report that this morning we lost Cameron. He passed away in his sleep due to a seizure which was a result of an ongoing medical condition for which he was being treated. The world is now undoubtedly without one of its brightest lights, but his spirit will live on through the kindness and compassion of all who knew and loved him. We are utterly heartbroken and ask for privacy during this immensely difficult time as we grieve the loss of our precious son and brother.”

Boyce was perhaps best known for his work as Carlos on the Disney Channel’s Descendants films and Descendants: Wicked WorldTV series and had completed work on the upcoming sequel Descendants 3 prior to his passing. He also starred as Luke Ross on Disney’s family comedy series Jessie.

His Jessie co-star Skai Jackson responded to the tragic news by writing, “I never thought in a million years I would be writing this. Cam, you were one of a kind. My heart will be forever broken. I am so happy that I got to spend almost everyday with you on set, you gave the best hugs. I wish I would have hugged you tighter when I saw you a couple of months ago.”

Descendants director Kenny Ortega honored Boyce on Instagram, writing: “My Love, Light and Prayers go out to Cameron and his Family. Cameron brought Love, Laughter and Compassion with him everyday I was in his presence. His talent, immeasurable. His kindness and generosity, overflowing. It has been an indescribable honor and pleasure to know and work with him. I will see you again in all things loving and beautiful my friend. I will search the stars for your light. Rest In Peace Cam. You will always be My Forever Boy!”

Boyce first made an impression with his starring role in Panic! at the Disco’s 2008 music video for “That Green Gentleman.” He went on to earn a recurring role as Michael ‘Stone’ Cates Jr. in General Hospital: Night Shift as well as feature film roles in Mirrors and the Grown Ups film series alongside Adam Sandler.

Sandler shared a touching tribute to Boyce on Twitter. “Too young. Too sweet. Too funny. Just the nicest, most talented, and most decent kid around. Loved that kid,” he wrote. “Cared so much about his family. Cared so much about the world. Thank you, Cameron, for all you gave to us. So much more was on the way. All our hearts are broken. Thinking of your amazing family and sending our deepest condolences.”

In addition to Jessie and the Descendants films, Boyce also voiced the character Jake for Disney Junior’s animated series Jack and the Never Land Pirates and starred in Disney XD’s Gamer’s Guide to Pretty Much Everything. He could also be seen in the film Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer and was tapped to star in HBO’s new series Mrs. Fletcherand the TV follow-up to American Satan titled Paradise City.

Cameron Boyce’s fans have offered an outpouring of sorrow over the loss and paid tribute to how much the actor’s work meant to them on social media.

TV Guide has reached out to Disney about how this might affect the upcoming release of Descendants 3 and will update when a comment is available.
