Drunk History returns to WWII in Tuesday’s episode, this time focusing on Japanese American hero Frank Emi.
Fresh Off the Boat‘s Randall Park has the honors of drunkenly sharing Emi’s brave fight against American injustice during WWII by helping interned Japanese American’s resist the draft. We know Park can be funny thanks to his sitcom, but his well-placed belches and finger snaps really help to bring out the pop in Emi’s story.
Emi was an American citizen born to Japanese parents, but was forced into an internment camp after Japan bombed Pearl Harbor in 1941. Once he arrived in Wyoming, the United States government asked all of the prisoners to fill out “loyalty” questionnaires, but Emi refused. Instead, he started the Heart Mountain Fair Play Committee, which helped hundreds of Japanese men being held in the internment camps to resist the draft when President Franklin D. Roosevelt called on them to serve the country that was imprisoning them.

Park’s version of Emi’s story has a few slurred embellishments (please look out for the radio story announcing the attacks on Pearl Harbor), but still proves that Emi was such a proud American that he was brave enough to stand up to the government when it wasn’t upholding the values of our own constitution.
