Startled awake early Thursday morning by a Colorado Springs police officer, an intoxicated man immediately put the car he had been sleeping in into reverse and backed directly into the officer’s patrol car.

Things would only get worse for the tired traveler. Police did a license plate check on the car and discovered it had been stolen in South Dakota.

Colorado Springs officers arrested the man for investigation of aggravated motor vehicle theft, identity theft and driving under the influence, according to a police report.

At 2:15 a.m. a manager of a store in the 3000 block of Jet Wing Drive called 911 and reported a suspicious person in his parking lot.

The first officer to arrive parked his patrol car directly behind the car, where a man appeared to be sleeping, and turned on his emergency lights, the report says.

When the police officer woke the man sleeping in the car, the person put the car in reverse and backed up into the cruiser.

The suspect was arrested and booked into the Criminal Justice Center. His name has not been released.
