Fyre Festival, the failed luxury musical festival that went viral, is getting its own docu-series at Hulu.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the multi-part doc will explore exactly what went wrong with the disastrous event and who is to blame. The series will feature interviews with those closest to the festival and never-before-seen footage including leaked documents and recordings.
Fyre Fest was developed by then 25-year-old entrepreneur Billy McFarland and rapper Ja Rule to promote their Fyre Media booking app. The event promised a high-end experience over two weekends in the Bahamas with luxury tents and premium food catered by celebrity chefs. Big name performers like blink-182 and Migos were also expected to appear and the festival was even promoted by major social media influencers including Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner.
Festival goers, who paid between $1,500 and $12,000 per ticker, were met with subpar conditions including disaster relief tents, wet mattresses and processed cheese served on bare bread — a far cry from what was advertised. Many attendees also became stranded when the flights to and from the island were canceled. In the wake of the debacle, photos from the event went viral and organizers were put under intense scrutiny.
Eight lawsuits were filed against McFarland and Ja Rule including a $100 million class action suit involving 150 plaintiffs in California. Fyre Festival was also investigated by the FBI for fraud and resulted in McFarland being indicted for one count of wire fraud, which he pled guilty to.
The docu-series is being developed by Billboard, Mic and The Cinemart and is expected to arrive sometime in 2019.
